With summer in full swing, it’s important to keep to your fitness routine while staying safe in the summer heat. With higher temperatures and humidity, you may feel that exercising outdoors may take more effort – and you are not wrong!
SIX’s new outdoor workouts allow our members to continue their fitness journey outside, but it can be a scorcher to work out on a hot day! Our tents help provide shade during classes, but the heat can be intimidating for those who may be interested in taking a class.
With new and seasoned members getting used to outdoor workouts, we wanted to share some helpful tips to help you continue or get started!
Below, we list our best tips for exercising outdoors in the summer heat:
Tip #1: Check the Weather Beforehand
Warm weather and humidity can affect the way you exercise. Heat can make you feel tired because your body is burning more during a workout than it would in cooler temperatures. This happens because your body is burning energy during the workout while trying to stay cool at the same time. Check the weather before your workout so you know what to expect.
Tip #2: Pay Attention To Your Body
If you’re not sure how your body will react to an outdoor workout, take it easy at first. Your body will get used to working out in the heat in about 10 to 14 days, so going in too fast may be harmful. Be consistent and take your time to acclimate to the weather. Don’t forget to pay attention to your body and be sure to take a rest if you’re tired, dizzy, or dehydrated.
Tip #3: Switch Up Your Workout Time
When exercising outdoors, you should plan to start your routine early in the morning or later in the day. This is because the sun is at its hottest in the afternoon. We understand that lunchtime routines can be tempting to fit in, but if possible, try to switch up your routine times to avoid the intense heat during the middle of the day. Who knows, you may discover that you’re an early riser after all!
Tip #4: Get Comfortable In The Heat
When you feel hot, your body creates its own cooling system! It naturally tries to cool you off by sweating, but you can assist in the process by wearing clothes that help you stay cool! Moisture-wicking or dry-fit clothes are great options for workout clothing because they help regulate your temperature. Invest in specialized clothing that looks great and helps you feel great!
Tip #5: Stay Hydrated!
The most important tip we recommend for outdoor workouts is to stay hydrated! Drink water before your workout to start off well, and replenish your body during the workout to avoid dehydration. When you get too hot, you may experience dizziness and fatigue, so take that as a sign that you need to rest and take a sip of water!
