Feeling Dizzy Post-Workout? X Possible Causes

Feeling dizzy after a sweat sesh?

It may sound familiar to you. Post-workout dizziness usually isn’t a sign of anything serious. Oftentimes, it results from improper breathing or dehydration.

If you too feel dizzy post your workout session, read this blog to know why you feel it and what you can do to stop it.

Overexertion

According to NCBI research, “36.2% of injuries at fitness facilities happen due to overexertion.” 

Overexertion is common in group exercise classes and team training sessions. It can happen with anyone, anywhere, and anytime. The common cause of overexertion is pushing yourself too hard during a workout. Pushing too hard during your workout can cause your blood pressure to drop or result in dehydration.

Some of the signs of overexertion are:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Thirst
  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Feeling faint, etc.

If you’re feeling dizzy or light-headed post-sweat sesh, take a minute to cool down, slow your heart rate, and catch your breath. Drink as much water as possible to rehydrate your depleted muscles.

Dehydration

Dehydration occurs when you lose more water than you’re taking in.

When you exercise, your body temperature rises. Your body sweats to cool itself down. You can lose a lot of water during intense exercise, especially if it’s a hot day. In addition to dizziness, you may experience:

  • lightheadedness
  • dry mouth
  • extreme thirst
  • fatigue

Your body needs between 2.7 and 3.7 liters of water in a day. The need will increase as per your activity level. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), you should drink approximately 17 to 20 ounces of water about two hours before your workout. During a workout session, you should sip periodically whenever you’re able to, and shoot for about 7-10 ounces of water every 20 minutes or so. Make sure to drink enough water during your workout session to avoid dehydration.

Lack of Oxygen

During exercise, muscles use more oxygen than usual. This is why your heart rate and breathing become faster to facilitate a higher intake of oxygen. Lack of oxygen occurs when your body is not able to take enough oxygen to meet the needs of muscles.  Improper breathing can be one of the reasons for the lack of oxygen in the body.

People who do not breathe often enough or deeply enough can experience a lower-than-optimal level of oxygen in the brain. You might feel dizzy when your brain requires more oxygen to function properly.

To avoid this situation, try to balance between keeping your core tight and holding your breath. The longer you practice this, the easier it will become.

Low Sugar Levels

Sugar is the primary source of energy for your body. Your body consumes more energy during exercise. Within the first fifteen minutes of exercise, your body absorbs sugar from the bloodstream and muscles to sustain your energy. Your blood sugar levels start dropping as soon as the sugar in your bloodstream gets depleted. In this case, the body starts drawing glucose from the liver, making you feel dizzy.

Your brain relies on glucose to function normally. When your brain is starved for glucose, you may feel dizzy.

Other symptoms include:

  • sweating
  • shaking
  • confusion
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • hunger
  • clumsiness
  • irritability
  • anxiety
  • dizziness

You can boost your sugar levels post-workout by eating a banana or by drinking a glass of juice.

Heart Arrhythmia

Another reason to feel dizzy post-workout is a heart condition known as heart arrhythmia. It’s a condition that may cause your heart to beat too slowly, too quickly, or irregularly. The various factors that can cause heart arrhythmia include emotional stress and heart conditions.

Exercise can also trigger or worsen a heart arrhythmia, particularly in people who have heart disease. Some of the symptoms that Heart arrhythmias patients can experience are:

  • dizziness
  • change in heartbeat
  • fainting
  • lightheadedness
  • shortness of breath
  • sweating

Even when symptoms occur, it does not necessarily mean that a person has a serious problem. However, it is always important to see a doctor for persistent arrhythmias.

If you feel dizzy post your workout session, there’s nothing to worry about. However, it’s always best to consult with your doctor regarding your health concerns.
