How to Practice Mindfulness at Home

The “new normal” has been a massive adjustment that changed virtually everything we know.

It’s not as simple as flipping a switch, and you may find yourself feeling anxious or unsure because this is unknown territory. External and internal factors can affect your mood, but rest assured, there is a way to make sense of the world around you.

The answer: mindfulness. Use this practice as a way to naturally calm yourself and focus on what’s happening in your life in order to understand why you feel a certain way.

Mindfulness has benefits, but the most reassuring of all is that you can practice it at home. Here are a few steps to help you practice mindfulness.

1. Make Time And Space

If possible, find an area where you can practice mindfulness without being disturbed. While this can be difficult during quarantine, it is important to have space where you can be alone with enough time to complete your thoughtful journey. If space is an issue, ask your family or roommates to stay in a shared space in the meantime, and go into an empty room or the backyard!

2. Let Yourself Do Nothing

Once you’ve found a spot, maintain attention on you and nothing else. While distractions may be likely, try to focus your mind and block out any external distractions. Think of this step as a protective layer, or bubble, that you surround yourself with to keep your thoughts in and everything else out.

3. Think Of What Is, Not What Was

After you’ve blocked out everything else, you can begin thinking about what is making you feel the way you do. While the past may hold the root of your worries, it’s important not to dwell in what was, but to think about what’s happening currently. Assess what can be done in the present and accept things as they come. You can’t change the past, but you can change how you feel in the future with how you respond now.

4. Focus On Your Thoughts

Pay attention to the things you say, the words you use, and what your thoughts are. Now, question why you said or thought them. If you’re coming from a place of understanding, you can get to the bottom of your concerns and worries. If you realize that you are having judgemental thoughts or feelings – don’t worry. Acknowledge those sentiments and let the negativity go. It’s all about being mindful.
