Here are SIX tips for healthy snacking!
Drink More Water
It may be hard to resist, but if you feel the need to nibble on something, take a moment to really ask yourself if you’re hungry. If you’re not hungry, drink some water! Not only does water keep you hydrated, but it can also make your stomach feel full and effectively ward off those hunger pangs. Next time you feel like snacking, ask yourself: Am I hungry, or can water satisfy my craving?
Add Some Flavor
If you feel that your carrot sticks and hummus aren’t satisfying enough, try to add some flavor to your snacks! Add lime juice, spices, or herbs to elevate your snacks. These ingredients typically have no calories, so you don’t have to feel guilty for wanting to spice up your snacks! Try it out with your next meal too!
Don’t Give In
Avoid peer pressure when you make healthy snack choices. If your partner or friend invites you out to get frozen yogurt, you can indulge too. However, select toppings that are nutritionally good for you like fresh fruits or nuts. Don’t give in to temptation. It’s up to you to decide what you put in your body, so have the strength to say yes to healthier options.
Pre-pack Your Snacks
Snacks can provide a boost of energy to help you power through the day, but be mindful of your snack choices. Avoid sugary snacks or candy that will make you sluggish instead of energizing you. It’s a good idea to pre-pack snacks before you need them. That way, when you finally hit the midday slump, you don’t have to worry about hitting the communal vending machine.
Savor Your Snacks
Enjoy every moment of your snack time! Snack portions are meant to keep us healthy, but if you aren’t satisfied, try chewing slower and savoring each moment. Let yourself fully taste every morsel of your snack and enjoy the experience, even if it’s just an apple with peanut butter. When you savor your snacks, you will feel satiated by the experience and successfully curb your appetite.
Put Fruit First
When your cravings set in, it’s a rush to get your hands on chocolatey, sugary, or salty snacks. Don’t let these treats get you on the wrong track. Switch up your mentality and get in the habit of putting fruit first. Best of all, you don’t have to settle for plain fruit! Add a tablespoon of your favorite nut spread or a light dressing to enhance your snack experience.
